MENSTRUAL DISORDERS

Heavy menstrual bleeding(Menorrhagia), painful menses(dysmenorrhea), post coital bleeding, delayed cycles (oligomenorrhoea), frequent menstrual cycles(polymenorrhoea), absent menstrual periods (amenorrhoea) are some of the commonest menstrual complaints in women.

Depending on the nature of the problem treatment options could vary from medical to surgical methods.

 
 

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN DISEASE/ SYNDROME (PCOD/ PCOS)

PCOD/ PCOS is one of the commonest hormonal disorder seen in gynecological practice. Women with PCOD have infrequent menstrual cycles, excess male hormone dependent symptoms (acne, unwanted facial/ body hair), abnormal pigmentation (acanthosis nigricans) , obesity and problems conceiving.

PCOD can have long term medical implications like diabetes, high blood pressure, hyper cholesteremia and endometrial hyperplasias and cancers.

It is very essential to see the gynecologist at the earliest to discuss your treatment options as the saying goes one size doesn’t fit all

 

ENDOMETRIOSIS

When uterine lining tissue (endometrium) grows in tissues outside the uterus like ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvis , ectopic sites(scars) th condition is refered to as endometriosis.

Painful menstruation, heavy bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, difficulty in conceiving, painful sexual intercourse, painful urination/defecation are some of the symptoms of endometriosis.

Pain can sometimes be so severe and incapacitating in endometriosis. Fortunately treatment options (medical/ surgical) are available to treat this condition.

FIBROIDS

Fibroids(leiomyomas) are non cancerous growths/ tumors occurring in and around the uterus. They are female hormone dependent tumors and hence commonly seen in reproductive age group women.

Symptoms can vary depending on the size, site , number of fibroids.
Commonest symptoms include painful periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain/ backache, fertility issues, pregnancy complications, urinary and bowel symptoms.

Asymptomatic/ incidentally detected fibroids might not require active interventions and can be followed up periodically.
Symptomatic fibroids need to be treated depending on the symptoms and patient’s clinical condition. Several factors have to be taken into consideration in fibroids treatment and it’s very essential to see an experienced gynecologist if you are suffering with fibroids.

 
 

ADOLESCENT GYNECOLOGY

Gynecological issues in adolescent age group need to be dealt with in a specialized manner as they are still in the growing phase.

LEUCORRHOEA/ VAGINITIS

Vaginal discharge, itching, foul odor, burning, painful intercourse are the symptoms of vaginitis.

Not all vaginal discharge is infectious and abnormal. Physiological vaginal discharge is called leucorrhoea and it’s normal.
